Beard of Action: John Steinbeck

John_Steinbeck_1962

“the [Beardivist] is delegated to declare and to celebrate man’s proven capacity for greatness of heart and spirit—for gallantry in defeat, for courage, compassion and love. In the endless war against weakness and despair, these are the bright rally flags of hope and of emulation.”

-Steinbeck 1962 Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech

Note: Zealous readers may point out that Steinbeck sported a moustache for much of his life.  The above picture was taken at the time of the quote, indicating Steinbeck did not qualify for the Nobel Prize until he achieved full beard.  Thus we celebrate his scholarly Beard of Action.
